Golden Child Recordings is an independent label founded by Canadian singer and songwriter Daniel Caesar, in partnership with producers Matthew Burnett and Jordan Evans. In media interviews, Daniel has said that he founded his own label, not because other labels were not interested in him but the reason was that he wanted to retain control over his work.
In 2017, Daniel Caesar released Freudian via LP, digital download, and streaming. It was followed by Case Study 01, released in the same formats plus CD.
Golden Child was a relatively young independent label going through the inevitable growing pains of running a business. The Canadian newcomer, like most other start-ups, was learning as they progressed.
One of their main challenges was building their internal infrastructure and in-house systems. They had to do this from scratch, as they merged traditional industry models and their own new business model. While they had stop-gaps in place that kept them running for the first three years, they knew they needed professional help.
When they started searching for a partner, their top three criteria were functionality, cost, and customer service. They wanted to find a company who shared their values, understood their processes, and appreciated their immense growth potential.
Prior to the engagement, all the label’s royalties were calculated in-house using Excel. It was also used to summarize the various income streams. Whilst Excel is an efficient platform for organising finances, a fast-growing company like Golden Child needed a more streamlined system.
As their release and roster grew, it was no longer practical to spend as much time calculating royalties manually. They saw additional artists and contracts on the horizon, and it was time to bring in the experts.
Korrect setup and trained the Golden Child team on their Royalty application. The designated account manager handholding and helping Golden Child’s royalty team through their first royalty run – assisting in validating and reconciling the numbers.
Subsequently this hybrid solution (neither completely outsourced or in-house) of both teams working together moves at the clients pace to be more on the customer’s side as each royalty period completes, although Korrect is always on hand for anything that might be required.
The levelled-up reports generated by the software did not go unnoticed. Korrect allows clients to customise their statements, constructing them in various formats, to be as transparent as possible to the recipients. This more professional presentation was cited by Golden Child’s partners and stakeholders.
Both teams are working on a continually evolving platform where the system takes on more and more areas of the administrative tasks and an all-encompassing solution for Golden Childs expanding business.
“The biggest pro of using this software is having everything in one place. It's easy to pull up contracts, review prior payments and statements, and even project for future quarters. It's our official home base for all things royalty-related now. I cannot thank the Korrect team enough for their time and patience onboarding us the past few months. I'm looking forward to the future!” – Jaimie Milburn, VP for Operations
